Greetings! I’m Travis and I welcome you to my Media and Technology Blog. This blog is dedicated to digital media and technology, with a little touch of business and marketing topics sprinkled in. Just to keep it light, I also have a “Beer Break” and “Just for Fun” category that provide a little breathing room for some of my other interests.
Now, allow me to introduce myself. I’m the Digital Media Services Manager at Microsoft Production Studios and I have always had a love of media and technology. I graduated from Washington State University in 1995 with a minor in business and a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Communication from what is now the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication. After a few years of working in local television and corporate video production, I became mesmerized by the inherent potential of delivering media over an emerging medium called the Internet. In 1998, I joined Microsoft, where I have been working to deliver compelling media experiences via the web, game and media consoles, private networks, satellite, fiber, IPTV, RF cable, signage and more. Since joining the company, I’ve had the pleasure of working on exciting initiatives in the area of interactive media (like interactive television & ActiMate’s Interactive toys) as well as pioneering in the areas of digital encoding, digital cinema and streaming media delivery. I’ve been able to lead the broadcast and webcast efforts of nearly every major Microsoft launch from Windows 98 to Windows 8. However, I’m most appreciative that over the last 15 years I’ve had the good fortune of working with some of the smartest, most talented and fun people in the industry – both inside and outside of the company.
Outside of the office, I stay active in the media and technology community however I can. I’m energized by innovation and I love to connect with people who are doing cool, new things. From 2005 to 2010 I managed the Seattle Podcasting Network, produced the CrapMonkey Podcast, and also lent technical editing support to the authors of the Podcasting Bible). I try to stay connected with others through participation and attendance in local industry events and groups such as SMC Seattle, Seattle MindCamp, Ignite Seattle, Meetups, and Conferences like NAB, New Media Expo, Streaming Media, iStrategy, and more.
Beyond my media and technology interests – I love getting outdoors in the Summer and Winter to hike and camp. I live in Seattle, Washington, with my wife Wendy, but we spend a great deal of time just East of the mountains in our other favorite place, Roslyn. In fact, one of our little side projects is “WhyRoslyn.com“, a website dedicated to the people and places of Roslyn. Finally, it’s probably also worth mentioning that I am a bit of a craft beer fanatic – especially Northwest style IPAs, Porters, and Stouts. I brew beer when I can (sometimes it comes out pretty good) and I try to visit new breweries and brewfests whenever I can squeeze them in.
That’s me in a nutshell. Thank you very much for stopping by and I hope to see you back here again in the near future. Please feel free to leave a comment on the blog or just drop a note to say hello (Travis@petershagen.me).
